Out of the Closet

I designed the cover for Out of the Closet by Grace Houghton and Lizzie Saunders, a forthcoming collection of personal essays from college students sharing their coming-out stories. The illustration brings together multiple interior scenes into one cohesive composition, visually representing the diversity of voices and lived experiences within the book. Flowing rainbow elements connect the spaces, symbolizing identity, movement, and the spectrum of perspectives explored in the essays. Through warm tones, intimate settings, and expressive character moments, the cover reflects both the vulnerability and strength at the heart of the collection. Out of the Closet is set for release in Fall 2026.

I began the design process by building a vision board that pulled together visual references around intimacy, shared spaces, and subtle expressions of identity. I was especially drawn to layered interior scenes and symbolic uses of color to reflect emotional complexity. From there, I developed a series of thumbnail sketches exploring different compositions — some centered on a single figure, others on interconnected vignettes. After selecting the strongest concept, I refined the layout digitally, experimenting with perspective, color balance, and typography placement. Several draft iterations focused on ensuring the rainbow elements felt integrated rather than decorative, ultimately shaping a cohesive composition that visually connects the many voices within the collection.

As a queer reader, this project felt deeply personal and meaningful. Stories about coming out — especially from young adults navigating identity, community, and self-acceptance — are narratives I connect with both emotionally and culturally. My love of books and lived understanding of queer experiences allowed me to approach the cover with care, authenticity, and intention. It was important to me that the design feel warm, layered, and honest — reflecting not just pride, but the everyday realities and intimate moments that make these stories so powerful.
